Call with Parts

In Challenge Dancing, there are several concepts in which the dancers are required to intimately know the actual parts of a call. This appendix attempts to document those calls that are broken down into parts and to define the concepts that require dancers to know those parts.

This appendix contains a list of calls (C3B or below) that are composed entirely of well-defined parts. By the term 'well-defined', we mean those calls in which there is a general consensus that the call consists of parts, and there is a general consensus of what those parts are. Each listed call is followed by its level and then the enumeration of its parts. We have tried to create an inclusive list of calls with well-defined parts, but there is always the possibility that we have missed calls or that some callers will break up calls into different parts.

We have not listed calls that consist of a single part, or calls whose parts are not well-defined. Calls whose parts may be controversial are also not listed. For example, the call Little More may consist of the following two parts: (1) Little; (2) Centers Box Circulate [our preference]. Or, Little More may consist of these two parts: (1) Centers Step & Fold as Outsides 1/4 Right; (2) Centers Box Circulate as Outsides Counter Rotate 1/4.

Notes:

  • There are several calls which have a well-defined first part or a, well-defined last part, but do not have well-defined other parts. These calls are not listed in this appendix.
  • The definitions in this appendix attempt to convey the parts of the call rather than the absolute definition of the call.
  • Parts and Fractionalization of a call are sometimes different. For example:
    • Swing Thru has two parts but can be fractionalized into quarters.
    • Reverse The Pass has three parts but can also be fractionalized into halves or sixths.
