Progressive Squares are a rectangular array of 8-dancer squares,
in which the caller moves dancers between squares.
To do Progressive Squares within CSDS, from the
CSDS Main Menu,
select 'Specialty | Progressive'.
Methods to move dancers from one square to another include:
- From Back-to-Back Lines, via Move On.
- From Trade By formation, via Move On.
- From Squared Set with everyone facing out, via Move On.
- From Columns, via Circulate.
- From Waves or Two-Faced Lines, via Circulate.
CSDS can do the first three methods listed above (so far).
This page describes the
Back-to-Back Lines method of moving dancers from one square to another.
Teach the call
Move On:
-
If you're facing someone, Pass Thru.
Otherwise, California Twirl (or Partner Trade).
-
Move On feels like a Grand Trade By.
-
Dancers progress to the next square via a Pass Thru, or if facing out do a Partner Trade to face back in.
-
After a Move On, dancers then work with the 8 dancers in their new square.
-
Some callers simply use the term Pass Thru instead, meaning that if you're facing
another couple anywhere to do a Pass Thru, otherwise California Twirl to face back in.
Keep the calls simple, as breakdowns cause exponential problems later.
Hints for using
Move On:
-
Always move normal boy-girl couples...never move boy-boy or girl-girl couples.
Otherwise, some squares become asymmetric.
-
It's best to only move dancers when paired with someone from their original square.
Otherwise, resolving may be difficult.
-
After a Move On, if necessary, call Lines Forward & Back to orient
dancers to their new square.
Hints for resolving:
-
Move dancers back to their original square before resolving.
-
One way to do this:
- Start with Heads (or Sides) Square Thru 4
- all Slide Thru (everyone is now coupled with their corner)
- Pass Thru
- Move On
- Pass Thru or equivalent (e.g. Right & Left Thru + Square Thru 3)
- Move On
- Repeat the above 2 steps as desired
- Square Thru 3 or equivalent, to get dancers facing back toward their original square
- Pass Thru
- Move On
- Repeat the above 2 steps until dancers are back in their original square
- Slide Thru
- Allemande Left
-
To summarize:
- Keep each dancer with their original corner (or someone else from their original square)
- Do calls within other squares (e.g., true zeros, pass thru equivalents, square thru 3 equivalents)
- Move everyone back to their original square then call a resolve.

Additional notes:
-
Don't mix and match the several types of Move Ons in a sequence
(e.g., Back-to-Back Lines, Trade By, and Squared Set),
or you may quickly find that resolving becomes impossible.
