 Bob Tailed Q

Definition:

From facing pairs: Right arm turn opposite, come home and left arm turn partner, then go back to opposite for a right arm turn to take the next call. (A shortened Suzy Q)

Madeleine Allen 1956

 Dixie Style To A Wave

Definition:

From facing couples or two single file lines of two facing: Lead dancer (or dancer on the right) gives a right to opposite and pulls by, then catches left with the next, holds on and arm turns a quarter to form a wave.

Madeleine Allen 1957

 Dizzy Chain

Definition:

Do an "Everybody Chain" (Four girls right hand star across as the head men chain right and side men chain left). When the men meet the girls coming out of the center, they catch left and send the girls back where the men came from. Head men send a girl to the left and the side men will send a girl to the right. Girls will then pull by another girl with the right, meet a man in the position toward which they were sent and pull by left hands with him. Keep moving and pull by another girl with right hands to arrive at the next position at which she is courtesy turned by the man. Once again do an Everybody Chain and all the hand pull bys. This continues until all are home with partners. (At each position, the men will work with three girls before the next Everybody Chain).

Madeleine Allen and Lou Hughes 1958

 Double Pass Thru

Definition:

From a column arrangement in which two couples, one behind the other, on each side of the set face the center (This is called "Double Pass Thru Formation"): Dancers walk forward passing right shoulders until each dancer has passed two people. Finishes with two couples on each side of the set (one behind the other) facing out (known as Completed Double Pass Thru Formation).

 Illegitimate Chain

Definition:

All arm turn partner by the left. Head ladies "chain" left, head men "chain" right (side men must "chain" left and side ladies must "chain" right). All arm turn the one they meet halfway by the left and all "chain" back home again to arm turn partners by the left. This time the head men chain left and the head girls chain right to arm turn the one they meet with a half left turn and all chain home again once more to arm turn partner by the left to take the next call. The chain is "illegitimate" because there is no courtesy turn after the right hand pull by--only a left arm turn halfway.

Jerry Helt and Madeleine Allen 1950's

 Triple Dixie

Definition:

From two facing files of three at the head positions with lonesome dancer facing in at each side of the set (NOTE: a special set-up): The files will do a Dixie Chain type action starting with right hands, then with the left, then the right. The call is generally for the leads to turn left around one, next person to do a U-turn back and the third persons to "Chain 3/4" to be courtesy turned by the man at the side. Finishes in a line of three facing in at the sides and a lonesome dancer at the heads.

Madeleine Allen 1950's

 Who's On First?

Definition:

From a squared set: Number one couple walks across the set to do a centers in with the No. 3 couple and then U-turn back. This forces the other six dancers to slide to their left or right 1/8 of a position to re-form a new squared set. All dancers now assume the new position number. The new No. 1 now repeats the action and the other dancers slide 1/8 to re-form the square, etc.

Dan Allen and Madeleine Allen 1955
