Bill Zambella |
William (Bill) Anthony Zambella, Jr., was born August 22, 1931 in Norfolk, VA to William Anthony Zambella, Sr. and Mary Emory (Forest) Zambella. Bill Zambella, Jr. was raised by his stepmother, Martha, and his father Bill Zambella, Sr.
Bill Zambella joined the U.S. Army in 1948 at the age of 17, and was stationed in North & South Carolina for basic training and military duty. He was in the military from 1948-1958, and again 1965-1975 when he retired, for a total of 20 years.
During his military career, Bill Zambella was stationed in Ft. Worden and was part of a unit sent to the Nevada Test Site. There, he witnessed the detonation of Operation Tumbler-Snapper. His unit was quite close to the detonation area and the service men were not given protective clothing. In 1983, Bill was diagnosed with a type of leukemia that many men experienced after witnessing such nuclear detonations. He lived 15 months after the diagnosis.
Bill began his calling career with the Roamin Tacomins ca. 1952. He loved music and after attending a square dance, was intrigued with the "patter" of the dance. He had a great singing voice and quickly learned the moves of the various patter. Wherever Bill was stationed with the U.S. Army he found a square dance club.
Bill Zambella met Levicie Murphy at a square dance on the first Thursday night of November 1966 at Fort Campbell, KY. Bill was the caller and instructor for the Boots and Chutes Square Dance Club at Fort Campbell. They were married six weeks later on December 24, 1966. In December 1967, Bill and Levicie left Fort Campbell and moved to Stuttgart, West Germany.
Bill and Levicie were elected president of the European Square Dance Callers and Teachers Association (ECTA) in Germany during the 1969-1970s and of the Kentuckiana Square Dance Callers Association in Louisville, KY in the 1970s.
Bill was sent to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio in June 1982 to undergo treatment for leukemia. Bill spent the next year in and out of the hospital. Bill died on August 26, 1983.
