Frederick Wayne “Fireball Fred” Strang, 70 of Johnstown died November 24, 2017 at the Atrium Manor.
Born January 20, 1947 in Homestead, PA the son of the late Clyde and Ernestine Virginia (Sineath) Strang,
he got the bug to start calling in 1967. There was an application in the American Square Dance newspaper to
apply to attend a calling school. Strang was one of four people selected to attend the training in 1977 at
James Madison University in Virginia. He learned routines and timing.
He called more than 200 dances a year. He was a member of the Pittsburgh Area Callers and Cuers Association
and the caller for Franklin Squares, an older western style dance club in Pittsburgh. He was an artist on
several recording labels. He called for church groups, Scouts and picnics, and farm shows.
Survived by these siblings Clayton James “Bud” (Gloria) Strang; Suzette (John) Urban; Nanette (Rick) McLaughlin;
Yvette R. Michael; and Babette D. (Brett) Saunders. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Fred was a Vietnam war Veteran who was a wounded warrior with 2 Purple Hearts. He retired from Eat-N-Park.
Whoever Fred came in contact with left with a smile on their face after Meeting Fred. In lieu of flowers family
asks donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or St. Jude.
