Profile in Callers and Cuers In 1969 Chuck attended a square dance class in Mankato, Minnesota and had a lot of fun dancing. His Aunt and Uncle, Kenny and Margaret Gist were round dance cuers and got Chuck involved into cuing rounds. After his uncle gave him a singing call record, "Summer Sounds", he purchased some PA equipment and began practicing for the rest of the year. In the fall of 1970 he advertised a class in Mapleton, MN and started a class. He, however, had no idea how to teach. Luckily, his home club, the Mankato Circle Eights had classes every Sunday evening. Chuck attended these classes and taught what he learned there to his Tuesday night class. It worked. He was off. Then on Halloween Night 1970 in Albert Lea, MN there was a Night Owl Dance. Chuck was asked if he would call a singing call. He was reluctant but there were only 5 squares left and it was 4:30 in the morning so he agreed. After that night he purchased more records and began to book dances.
Debbie attended Harold Bausch's Callers Clinic in the summer of 1998 in Fremont, Nebraska with Chuck. That was enough to give her the bug. Since then she has called with Chuck at nearly all of his dances and many dances that she has been the featured caller. She has now called in 12 states (Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota, Indiana, North Carolina, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Oregon, Arizona, and Texas.) Together they own the Cheyenne record label and have recorded over 45 songs.
