Percolate: Make it be 1) Circulate; 2) 1/2 Circulate; 3) etc.
I just received your C1 & C2 book from my wife, Sandy, for Christmas.
On page i you ask for comments; well, . . . OK.
I have some comments and suggestions.
Most are things that are peculiar to me and you don't need to take seriously.

One error:
Page 219. In the middle figure, there are 2 "b"s and no "d".

One printing error:
The page numbers are on the top outside corner of each page.
However, after page 84, three blank pages are inserted and now the following pages
have the page number on the inside next to the spiral binding. Then page 147 is missing
(page 146 and page 148 are on the opposite sides of the same page). But now, the page
numbers are again on the outside corner of the page. This results in "Relocate the Diamond"
being missing. It is a good thing that I am only interested in C1; at least for now.

Suggestions:
1. Separate the book into Part 1, C1 calls and part 2, C2 calls.
Since most people are learning one level at a time, this would make the instructions easier to access.
However, by having both levels in the same book, it saves the cost of buying separate books for each level.

2. Pg 15. The title is "2/3 Recycle" but the 3 parts and the figures are for "Recycle".
It is not immediately obvious where 2/3 recycle stops. (Yea, I know, its 2/3rds of full recycle)
Maybe adding "completed" under the 3rd figure (2/3 Recycle) and "Recycle completed" under the 4th figure would help.

3. Pg 17. I added lines between the dancers in the triangles and arrow heads to indicate the direction of the circulate.
Yea, I know this is picky.

4. Pg. 20. I added a dashed line box around the outside 2 dancers (top and bottom) to indicate they are working together.

5. Pg. 26. I added lines between the Xs in a box and between the Os in a box to emphasize the formation.

6. Pg. 102. I added lines between the Xs in a diamond and between the Os in a triangle to also emphasize the formation.

7. Pg. 117. I also added lines to show the path of the circulate and arrows to show direction.

8. Pg. 218. The initial definition, 2nd paragraph, is confusing. (accurate but confusing)
The definition following Notes: is much clearer.

9. Pg. Index. It would be nice to indicate the level of the call in the index.
or have a separate index for each level in part 1 and part 2..

You have produced a very comprehensive book well worth the investment.
Thanks

Rich and Sandy Brown

C1 Book bug:
 Alter & Circulate:
Lower right diagram should have 'as Outside 4 Circulate'.
At the bottom, the last defined "sub-call" of Square Chain Thru, you
propose to change "Square Thru on the 2nd hand..." with the following
hand-written note: "Right Pull By; 1/4 In and Step To A L-H Wave;..."
but the web has it slightly differently with the semi-colon in a different
place: "Right Pull By & 1/4 In; Step To A L-H Wave; ..." Which is it?
Message = Your definition says that the centermost 4 dancers do
the stretching. Is this always the case? I've seen callers
do something where only the center 2 dancers stretch
(i.e. Stretch Diamond Circulate from point-to-point diamonds).
Would you consider this to be an illegal use of the Stretch concept?
Swing The Fractions:
Must change the definition in the Ceder Chest to state: "Those who *meet* and can..."
At the bottom of the definition of Square Chain the Top you define
Square Chain Cross the Top. Although I don't know C4, I image you mean
"Turn Thru" rather than "Left Turn Thru" since you're in a RH Wave after the Spread.
Flip The Line:
Note: As with Tag The Line, the caller can optionally give a direction
after the call (e.g., Flip The Line Left), in which case upon completion
of the call, turn 1/4 in place toward that direction.
C1 book: IL Triangle -> C1, Triple WLC -> C1, Any Hand -> A2, add def of Substitute.

Dixie Diamond: do the first part as on the Web.
Last night I was reviewing definitions, and happened upon
Chain Reaction in your August 7, 1997 version of the yellow book.
In it, I read
Very Centers and the directly facing Outside dancers do
a Pass Thru as the End of the Center Line Counter Rotate........
 ^^^
I added a "s" to my 1997 book.
I then took a look at the July 12, 1999 update. In it I found a
handwritten "s" at the end of "End", but it's not clear if it was
in the original printing or if I might have added it myself some
years ago.
Wanted to make sure you are aware of this minor typo so you can fix
it someday, if you haven't already.

As a gimmick, some callers occasionally call Reverse Swing The
Fractions, wanting the dancers to do the call in Reverse Order. We
believe these callers should instead say Reverse Order Swing The
Fractions, since just the word Reverse could have several different
interpretations (e.g., Left or Mirror, Replace 1/4 Turns with 3/4
 Turns, etc...)

On Unwrap The Interlocked Diamond, mention that the very centers
 quickly go in front!
Wheel The Ocean/Sea
-------------------
 Reword the 'Hint'.
With The Flow
-------------
What about from 3&1 Lines an AH SO WITH THE FLOW?
From Eight Chain Thru, a STRETCH PASS THE OCEAN is danced as a
Pass Thru; Centers Pass Thru; all 1/4 In & Touch. Ends in a R-H
Tidal Wave.
7) From a Tidal Wave, a STRETCH RECYCLE is danced as a Recycle; then
Centers Half Sashay. Ends in Facing Lines.
8) From Facing Lines, a STRETCH VEER LEFT is danced as an As Couples
Veer Left. Ends in a As Couples R-H Two-Faced Line.
> So what??
> I am sure I do not have to send you a copy of the CALLERLAB definition -
> you know them better then anybody else.
I am a member of the CALLERLAB challenge committee and have spent
good many hours working on the CALLERLAB challenge definitions (C1
and C2). The CALLERLAB definitions are good, but they are not
perfect.
I have authored a book entitled "A Ceder Chest Of C1 And C2 Square
Dance Definitions" which in many ways is better than the CALLERLAB
definitions. I recommend it, if you don't already have it.
> Continue with the stroy:
> We did then the Stretch Recycle on the fly. The next hour (and the first
> caller again) he calls "Stretch Recycle - but only half Stretch" expecting
> the dancers to end up in a 1/4 Tag. :-(
My opinion is that the first caller was calling material
that was inappropriate and bogus (illegal). Perhaps this
caller is new to the level and doesn't understand it very well.
Callers should be proficient dancers at least one level above what
they are calling.
> The bad thing on that weekend was that many dancers and some callers (me
> too) said:
> "We do not dance C1 again till the definitions are rewritten in a way that

> are droped.":-(
My opinion of the weekend is that the first caller should not be
teaching C1.
My suggestion for the dancers is that they get several different
sources of definitions. Different dancers learn differently, and
some books may explain the material better for different dancers.
> Could you please send me a mail and explain the Stretch Concept in a way

> If you can do that, then I will copy it and send it via mail to the callers

Unfortunately, the Stretch CONCEPT is somewhat of a
'Learn-By-Example' concept.
I would recommend teaching Stretch as follows:
1) First, explain that 'Stretch' means a 4-dancer call is to be
executed on each side, and at the completion of the call, the 2
dancers from each side who end nearest the center of the set must
adjust to end in the far center.
2) Then, show the dancers an easy call such as Stretch Wheel &
Deal from Parallel Two-Faced Lines. Explain that for the
non-Stretch version of the call, the Trailers will end in
the center, and hence on the Stretch version of the call, they must
end in the far center. Show them that this is best
accomplished by a 1/2 Circulate & then Wheel & Deal.
3) Then, show them a Stretch Turn & Deal or Stretch 1/2
Tag from Parallel R-H Two-Faced Lines. Re-explain what
happened in #2 above.
4) Then, show Stretch Recycle (from Parallel Waves).
5) Let the dancers dance many sequences until they can successfully
dance all of the above examples.
6) If the dancers are strong dancers, also show them some of
the examples mentioned in the first part of this message.

From a Static Set:
 Heads Pair Off;
 all Pass The Ocean.
From this position, the long axis is from one Side position (#4
position) to the other Side position (#2 position).
From here, a STRETCH RECYCLE would be a Recycle (to end in
Facing Lines), and then Centers Half Sashay (i.e., go to the far
center by moving along the LONG AXIS. Dancers in this case have to
slide away from the nearest Side postion towards the farthest Side
position). The Centers can not do a Pass Thru since 1) they would
not be moving along the long axis; and 2) they would be staying
within their starting group of 4 (they must end 'interlocked' with
the other group of 4).
Vic (ceder@comptek.com)
Cross Chain Thru: Eight Chain Thru is the parent call for Cross Chain Thru.
entry = Wheel Fan Thru
Message = On a 'Wheel Thru' all dancers can 'Roll'.
As I understand the gestalt of 'Wheel Fan Thru', it is a 'Wheel Thru' interrupted after 1/2 with a 'Centers Trade' - and that's what Callerlab says. The last part of the motion in 'Wheel Thru' and 'Wheel Fan Thru' seems the very same to me. So I would think, everybody can 'Roll' after a 'Wheel Fan Thru'. CSDS doesn't share my opinion. What do you think?
Message = Hi Vic! Hi Debbie!
I was looking at the Ah So def and this took me aback:
"From a Couple, Ah So is equivalent to Wheel & Deal. From a Mini-Wave, Ah So is
equivalent to Single Hinge & Box Counter Rotate 1/4."
What? You can do an Ah So from a Couple or a Mini-Wave? Huh?
Then I figured out what you meant. Maybe it would be clearer if you said, "When
half of the line is a Couple, its part is equivalent.... When half of the line is a
Mini-Wave, ..."

Twist The Line: diagram from tidal setup.
Twist And...
I notice you use the term Step Ahead in defining the Centers part. Is this the same as Press Ahead -- and a plain English manner of expressing that idea? Have you defined it somewhere in your definitions? (I could not find it in a quick search.)
Cross Roll to a Wave:
Perhaps it would be good to add to the definition that "Cross Roll" is also used (i.e., omitting both Wave and Line).
in CEDER CHEST... First in your SD Definition, C1 & C2 (German version):

There is a hint explaining "Cross Scoot Back" (C4) with a diagram.

The right diagram shows after the Extend,
there are two "A" instead of a "A" and a "a". I think the
small "a" has to stand in the mini wave.
