From Eight Chain Thru, a STRETCH PASS THE OCEAN is danced as a Pass Thru; Centers Pass Thru; all 1/4 In & Touch. Ends in a R-H Tidal Wave. 7) From a Tidal Wave, a STRETCH RECYCLE is danced as a Recycle; then Centers Half Sashay. Ends in Facing Lines. 8) From Facing Lines, a STRETCH VEER LEFT is danced as an As Couples Veer Left. I am a member of the CALLERLAB challenge committee and have spent good many hours working on the CALLERLAB challenge definitions (C1 and C2). The CALLERLAB definitions are good, but they are not perfect. I have authored a book entitled "A Ceder Chest Of C1 And C2 Square Dance Definitions" which in many ways is better than the CALLERLAB definitions. My suggestion for the dancers is that they get several different sources of definitions. Unfortunately, the Stretch CONCEPT is somewhat of a 'Learn-By-Example' concept. I would recommend teaching Stretch as follows: 1) First, explain that 'Stretch' means a 4-dancer call is to be executed on each side, and at the completion of the call, the 2 dancers from each side who end nearest the center of the set must adjust to end in the far center. 2) Then, show the dancers an easy call such as Stretch Wheel & Deal from Parallel Two-Faced Lines. Explain that for the non-Stretch version of the call, the Trailers will end in the center, and hence on the Stretch version of the call, they must end in the far center. Show them that this is best accomplished by a 1/2 Circulate & then Wheel & Deal. 3) Then, show them a Stretch Turn & Deal or Stretch 1/2 Tag from Parallel R-H Two-Faced Lines. Re-explain what happened in #2 above. 4) Then, show Stretch Recycle (from Parallel Waves). 5) Let the dancers dance many sequences until they can successfully dance all of the above examples. 6) If the dancers are strong dancers, also show them some of the examples mentioned in the first part of this message. From a Static Set: Heads Pair Off; all Pass The Ocean. From this position, the long axis is from one Side position (#4 position) to the other Side position (#2 position). From here, a STRETCH RECYCLE would be a Recycle (to end in Facing Lines), and then Centers Half Sashay (i.e., go to the far center by moving along the LONG AXIS. Dancers in this case have to slide away from the nearest Side postion towards the farthest Side position). The Centers can not do a Pass Thru since 1) they would not be moving along the long axis; and 2) they would be staying within their starting group of 4 (they must end 'interlocked' with the other group of 4).
